After my year of living in London, I became OBSESSED with all of the British and Irish pies that I spent so much time eating in pubs. I decided to try my hand at a few and one of my favorites is this super easy cottage pie recipe.

Cottage pie is simply shepherd’s pie but with ground beef instead of lamb. You can certainly use lamb, I just prefer beef. Also, I know the photos are not great. Currently working on it! It’s so hard to take good photos while also cooking dinner. Might need to start batching recipe content!

Ingredients

  • 2 russet potatoes peeled and cut into cubes
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup half and half or milk
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 1/2 cups vegetables frozen or fresh, of your choosing
  • 1 tbsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • 1 tbsp garlic salt

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
  • Set a large pot of water to boil. Add salt and potatoes once boiling.
  • Once potatoes are fork tender, drain them and mash with butter and half and half until a creamy consistency. Set aside.
  • Meanwhile, add onion and garlic to a pan and cook until onions are soft, about 3-5 minutes.
  • Add ground beef, salt, pepper, garlic powder and onion salt to pan with onions and garlic.
  • When ground beef is mostly cooked, add frozen veggies to pan.
  • Cook for a few more minutes, until ground beef is completely cooked.
  • In a baking dish, add the ground beef mixture and spread the mashed potatoes on top. If desired, sprinkle cheese on top (cheddar works great).
  • Bake for 15 minutes until warmed through and optional cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Serve immediately.

This recipe is also great for leftovers! Recommend leaving in the fridge for 2 days or frozen for 2 weeks. It reheats great! Could also make ahead, and simply go to the oven step if you are trying to save time on weekday dinners!
